Started in 2001, the Dot NAME top-level domain extension is the single TLD planned for personal websites only. These domains can be personal or fictional names, nicknames and/or other designations people are famous by. At the beginning, just 3rd-level registrations were allowed, so if you desired to buy john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already grabbed third-level domain names remained functional.
